個人的には大天才だと思っているデイミアン・チャゼル〝初〟の商業映画
ミュージカル映画の底力を見せつけた『ラ・ラ・ランド』でタッグを組んだ二人が再び。
『セッション』などのデイミアン・チャゼル監督と、『ブレードランナー 2049』などのライアン・ゴズリング主演による話題作『ファースト・マン』。
当初は、第91回米アカデミー賞（2019年）の本命とも言われたが、フタを開ければ、アルフォンソ・キュアロン監督『ROMA/ローマ』や、ピーター・ファレリー監督『グリーンブック』、ヨルゴス・ランティモス監督『女王陛下のお気に入り』などが続々注目され、よもやの作品賞・監督賞・主演男優賞もノミネート落ち。
日本公開前の〝大絶賛〟という世界的評価はどこに行ったのか。
いやいや、おもしろかったですよ。
IMAXやドルビーアトモスなど、より良好な劇場であれば、記録より記憶に残る映画になるはずです。
なにしろ、空を見上げれば、そこに〝月〟がいつもあるわけで、一生空を見上げるたびに『ファースト・マン』で描かれた人類偉業と苦悩を思い出すのではないか。
そのなか、この『ファースト・マン』が、デイミアン・チャゼル監督のあえて〝初の本格商業映画〟だと思うのは……。
世界に名を広めた『セッション』は、憧れのミュージカル映画『ラ・ラ・ランド』を作るための前段階として撮ったと公言しているし、なんだかんだと『ラ・ラ・ランド』もまだまだ監督の個人的な映画っぽい。
その意味で『ファースト・マン』が、はじめての商業的な映画ではないかと思うわけです。
ちなみに脚本は、アカデミー賞『スポットライト 世紀のスクープ』や『ペンタゴン・ペーパーズ/最高機密文書』などのジョシュ・シンガー単独で、デイミアン・チャゼル自身はノータッチ。このあたりもこれまでとは違うのです。

2018年秋からみなさんも書いてますが、映画『ファースト・マン』を見る前に押さえたい映画タイトルはそこそこあります。
事前に見ていたら、より楽しめることは間違いないでしょう。
そのなかで、前日譚となるフィリップ・カウフマン監督・脚本の『ライト・スタッフ』は必見。

正確には〝前日譚〟と思ってましたが、実際に映画『ファースト・マン』を見ると、ニール・アームストロングのテストパイロット時代の宇宙開発と『ライト・スタッフ』はかぶってました。
物語として映画『ライト・スタッフ』は、ソ連との宇宙競争のなか、有人宇宙飛行計画「マーキュリー計画」の宇宙飛行士の選出と成長、当時の地上パイロット最高峰のチャック・イェーガー（世界初の音速を超えた）の対比を描きつつ〝パイロット〟の生き様を描く大長編。
そのうえで映画『ファースト・マン』で描くのは「マーキュリー計画」に続く「ジェミニ計画」と「アポロ計画」。
つまり、完全な続編でもあるわけです。
その昔『ライト・スタッフ』の続編企画を考えたことも
その昔、某映画プロデューサーと飲みながら「ライト・スタッフの続編作りたいね。ラストは当然あのセリフだよね」と語ってましたが……。
とうぜん日本の無名なクリエイターふたりで作れるわけもなく、そうった思い入れもあるので、よけいに思い深い作品となりました。
同じような気持ちの映画人や映画ファンは世界中に多くいたはずで、その思いをいまカタチにしてくれたというだけでも、感慨深い。
誰もが『ライト・スタッフ』の続くは見たかったはず。

Within this context, I believe “First Man” is Damien Chazelle’s first full-scale commercial film…
“Whiplash,” which brought his name to the world, was stated to be a preliminary step towards making his dream musical film “La La Land,” and in many ways, “La La Land” still feels like a personal film for the director.
In that sense, I consider “First Man” to be his first commercial film.
By the way, the script was solely written by Josh Singer, known for the Academy Award-winning “Spotlight” and “The Post,” with no involvement from Chazelle himself. This is also a significant departure from his previous works.
Films to Watch Before Watching “First Man”
Since the fall of 2018, many have mentioned that there are several films you should watch before “First Man.”
If you watch them in advance, you’ll undoubtedly enjoy it more.
Among them, the prequel “The Right Stuff,” directed and written by Philip Kaufman, is a must-see.

Strictly speaking, I thought it was a prequel, but when you watch “First Man,” it overlaps with Neil Armstrong’s space development during his test pilot days and “The Right Stuff”.
The story of “The Right Stuff” is a grand epic that portrays the lives of pilots through the selection and growth of astronauts in the “Mercury Program” during the space race with the Soviet Union, contrasting with the top ground pilot of the time, Chuck Yeager, the first to break the sound barrier.
Meanwhile, “First Man” depicts the “Gemini Program” and the “Apollo Program” that followed the “Mercury Program”.
In other words, it is also a complete sequel.
Once Thought of a Sequel to “The Right Stuff”
Once, over drinks with a certain film producer, we talked about wanting to make a sequel to “The Right Stuff.” We even talked about what the final line would be…
Of course, it wasn’t something two unknown Japanese creators could make, and it became an even more significant work for me due to such memories.
Many filmmakers and fans around the world must have felt the same way, and just having that sentiment realized now is deeply moving.
Everyone wanted to see the continuation of “The Right Stuff”.
